Sommige Engelse acteurs doen mij onwillekeurig aan Shakespeare denken, en soms wordt dat bevestigd door hun eigen uitspraken. Good old Shakespeare was niet altijd de vrolijkste van de bende, maar hij zet ons vandaag nog steeds aan het denken – zeg maar ‘relativeren’, zoals in zijn ‘play’ over koning ‘Macbeth’:
De verbitterde koning uit zijn machteloosheid bij de dood van lady Macbeth:
life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
het leven is slechts een wandelende schaduw, als een simpele toneelspeler
that struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
die zijn korte theatermoment krampachtig èn tobbend beleeft,
and then is heard no more;
en waar nadien niets meer van gehoord wordt;
it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
het is een verhaal dat luid en heftig verteld wordt door een idioot,
signifying nothing.
maar het heeft niets te betekenen.

Een hedendaags acteur denkt eerder: ‘the tale is not told by an idiot’ !
